Roland Garros: A Parisian Clay Court Experience
Embracing an awaited First: From London to the Heart of the French Open
This year, the stars truly aligned for a moment I'd long anticipated, and one I was quite determined to make happen: my inaugural visit to Roland Garros. I've been lucky enough to experience both Wimbledon and the US Open before, but Paris beckoned with a promise of something distinctly unique. As a devoted admirer of the sport, the journey to this historic clay court tournament, steeped in over 120 years of heritage, was brimming with a quiet excitement, a sense of discovery rather than mere attendance. After all, Paris has a way of infusing every experience with an undeniable touch of magic.
While my mind naturally drew comparisons to its Grand Slam counterparts, Roland Garros revealed a personality all its own. If Wimbledon embodies British elegance and the US Open energy, the French Open possesses an intrinsic charm, a certain je ne sais quoi that felt authentically French.
The grounds themselves were massive, with different dedicated sections, including areas for eating and shopping (you know I left with a bunch of new items). I particularly enjoyed the accessibility of the practice grounds, nestled so intimately amidst the active match courts. It was there, where the crowds still yet hadn’t caught on, that we had the unexpected pleasure of seeing Djokovic, up close and personal – a truly intimate glimpse into greatness that often comes with crowds and limited views.
If you have never experienced a grand slam or a tennis tournament, you are truly missing an opportunity to experience something unique! There is something so exhilarating about being able to wander the grounds, and come across so much tennis greatness. Being surrounded by history, elegance and thousands of other kindred spirits is inspiring. And for my fellow Americans, it's a particularly thrilling time to be a fan, as there are so many American players in the mix at the moment. At time of writing across men and women’s, there are six players in the top ten (USA, USA!)
As this was totally an experience that my boyfriend and I had long been awaiting! I am so happy we finally made it happen. With Paris’s proximity to our home in London, I know we will be back!
